The 113th birth anniversary of Geetiswami Gokulananda was organized by Nikhil Bishnupriya Manipuri Sanskriti Parisad Diphu Branch at Radha Krishna Sevashram Diphu. A.S Gautam V.P of Nikhil Bishnupriya Manipuri Mahasaba inaugurated the programme.

A.S Gautam, Chief Guest of the function said Geetiswami Gokulananda was the pioneer of the Bishnupriya Manipuri society. The day was also marked with a meeting held under the chairmanship of Aswini Kr. Singha, President Nikhil Bishnupriya Manipuri Sanskriti Parisad Diphu.

Speaking on the occasion, Ananta Kr. Singha, Ramananda Singha and social activist Putul Singha said Geetiswami Gokulananda was not only a reformist but also a revolutionist who by his composition educated the masses and modernized the Bishnupriya Manipuri community.

At the end of the ceremony, Mini Memorial Trust, Diphu, felicitated Bishnupriya Manipuri college students.

Guwahatians recall Geetiswami

GUWAHATI, Nov 29: The Greater Guwahati Gokulananda Geetiswami Udjapan Committee observed the 114th birth anniversary of Geetiswami Gokulananda at Shilpgram here today with a day-long function that was presided over by Prof (Retd) Kamini Mohan Sinha and attended, among others, by educationist and social worker Hemkanti Sinha as the chief guest, Prof (Retd) Shyam Charan Sinha as the guest of honour, MLA Kartik Sena Sinha as the distinguished guest and former president of Nikhil Bishnupriya Manipuri Mahasabha (NBMM) Manoranjan Sinha, who was honoured with the Geetiswami Purashkar at the function.

In his speech, noted speaker Colonel Bijay Sinha offered some “food for thought” for the Bishnupriya Manipuri intelligentsia by questioning the relevance of and reason behind match-making in accordance with the prediction and description given in horoscopes, a practice very much prevalent in the Bishnupriya Manipuri community much to the problems of a number of ill-fated girls and in their guardians. Colonel Sinha is of the firm view that self-dependence and other qualities of girls should prevail over those mentioned in their horoscopes in matters related to their nuptial affairs. Speaking on the contribution of Geetiswami, Colonel Sinha said Geetiswami should have been called an icon of the Bishnupriya Manipuri community.

This statement from Colonel Sinha had a feeble resistance from MLA Kartik Sena Sinha who said those mentioned in horoscopes do help ones to an extent though much depends on other aspects on ones life.

While receiving the Geetiswami Puraskar, Prof Manoranjan Sinha said it will not be an exaggeration if Geetiswami is called the creator of Bishnupriya Manipuri literature. He also highlighted the contribution of another poet, Leikhomsena Sinha.

The function also witnessed the felicitation of two personalties — Bhairab Sinha of Tripura and Biresh Ranjan Sinha — by DILS, a socio-cultural and literary organization. In his speech, DILS president Debojyoti Sinha said Geetiswami could best be identified as the national icon of the Bishnupriya Manipuri community.

In his presidential address, Prof Kamini Mohan Sinha laid stress on unity and integrity in the Bishnupriya Manipuri community so that it can survive various odds that are bound to come in their social life ahead. He made an appeal to the community members to follow the footsteps of Geetiswami.

A Brief Biography of Sahid Raj Babu Sinha

Published on the 104th Birthday anniversary of Sahid Raj Babu Sinha

Raj Babu Sinha was born on November 29, 1905 at Chiporsangan of the present Hailakandi district of Assam. His father’s name was Choba Sinha and mother Kusumi Devi.

The family of Raj Babu Sinha shifted to Masughat, Cachar, in the period between 1914 and 1915. Chouba Sinha died in the year 1916, and mother in the year 1922.

Under the guidance of Nandalal Sinha and aunt Gidhisou, he spent his childhood. In 1916, he was admitted into the Masughat Higher Primary School and passed it in 1921 with scholarship.

After coming out from the Masughat Higher Primary School he took admission in Sarat Kalimohon Practising Middle Vernecular (MV) School. In 1923, he passed the MV School with scholarship in first division. He took admission in the Silchar Govt Boys High School in 1924, and joined Calcutta University in 1930.

Through out his school life, Raj Babu Sinha was deeply associated with social activity. He established Balak Samity in his native village Masughat.

The Balak Samity used to meet on every Sunday where he imparted moral education to the boys. The Samity also got involved into activities like constructing village paths.

Raj Babu Sinha became Manager of the Manipuri Patrika ,which was published from Silchar. The Manipuri Patrika had luminaries editors like Late Samarjit Sinha and Dr Laireng Khomba Singha.

The year 1931 is an important year for the Manipuri community. It is in this year that British Government counted the community as “tribals”. The entire Manipuri community from Assam and undivided India unitedly opposed the declaration. In several meetings, the decision of the British Government was opposed.

Raj Babu Sinha placed the historical documents of the Manipuris before the Government and urged the error to be rectified, and count the Manipuris as caste Hindus. In 1932, the British Government accepted Manipuris as caste Hindus.

This development allegedly annoyed some people who were against the Government’s decision and with the role played by Raj Babu Sinha. On the night of 15th phalgun, Bengali Era 1340(March 1933), while coming back from the Manipuri Patrika office, situated at Tarapur, Silchar, he was attacked and killed.

After 7-day his body was found floating in the Barak river. The society declared him "martyr" for his precious role in changing the government’s decision.

People collected money for his "shrad" by singing the song "Samajor mangal koranir kajje… ahesil Rajbabu ae bhabe" composed by Late Komalkanta Sinha of Meherpur. The shrad ceremony started with the chorus prayer song composed by Late Nileshwar Mukherjee of Tripura.

Geetiswami birthday celebrated with gaiety

The 114th birthday celebration of Geetiswami Gokulananda was held with religious zeal and zest at Shri Shri Radhamadhav Sevasram, Maligaon (Guwahati) on November 26.

The day-long programme saw a huge gathering of Bishnupriya Manipuri people who came from the Guwahati city, Silchar, Tripura and from other places.

The programme started off with a flag hoisting ceremony (firal kupani) by Purandar Sinha, a senior citizen, and lamp lighting by other senior social workers. Jayprakash Sinha, President of the reception committee, gave the welcome speech.

Narendra Kumar Sinha (Thakur), General Secretary of the Gokulananda Geetiswami 114th Janma Tithi Udjapon Committee and Dils Lakhsmindra Sinha, President of Bishnupriya Manipuri Writers’ Forum, also addressed the audience and they thanked everyone attending the programme for extending their co-operation in organizing the birthday celebration of Gokulananda. The programme was presided over by Shyamakanta Sinha (Paran).

Haridas Sinha, biographer of Geetiswami Gokulananda, and the Guest of Honour in the event highlighted the major contribution made by Geetiswami for the upliftment and development of the community.

Other chief guests who spoke on the occasion were Dr. Prabhat Kumar Sinha, Lecturer, Radha Madhav College (Department of Political Science), Silchar; Manasi Sinha, teacher; Anjana Sinha, Editor of Nwa Drishti magazine; Shyamakanta Sinha, President of Radhamadhav Sevashram Committee.

Biswaprasad Sinha, Guwahati-based advocate; Shankha Sinha, General Secretary, Nikhil Bishnupriya Manipuri Yuva Parishad; Nilamadhav Mukherjee, Biresh Ranjan Sinha and Santa Sinha, also spoke on the occasion.

The main item of attraction on the occasion was felicitation of senior citizens (list of names of senior citizens may be seen on earlier news published on 21st Nov‘09) with a Certificate “Jaistha Nagarik Prasasti-Chuti” along with a token of gift. The winners of the singing and recitation competition held on November 22 were awarded with a certificate and cash prize. The programme concluded with a colourful cultural programme at 07:00 pm.

Various cultural programmes were organised on the occasion. Saini Sinha, Jubari Sinha, Champa Sinha and Promila Sinha presented a chorus song, Solo Keyboard presentation was performed by Chandrika Rajkumar. The artists who participated in Solo Singing Programme were Madhubala Sinha, Suchitra Sinha, Pradip Mukherjee Saini Sinha, Bina Sinha, Monica Sinha, Syamkumar Sinha and Harikanta Sinha.

Dance programme was presented by Saini Sinha, Supriya Sinha, Susmita Sinha, Rumi Sinha. The programme Kabita lekhya was directed by Joyraj Sinha and the participants were Deboshree Sinha, Suman Sinha, Bibhul and Rituparna Sinha. The Comedy performance by Niranjan Sinha brought peals of laughter among the audience. Rishikesh Sinha and Mrinal Kanti Sinha joined the artists in the Tabla and Bhibul in the Harmonium.

The day long programme was organized by Bishnupriya Manipuri Writers’ Forum in association with Nikhil Bishnupriya Manipuri Mahasabha, Sahitya Parishad, Sanskriti Parishad of Loutak Guwahati Anchalik Committee, Gokulananda Geetiswami(Kalakrishti) Jagaroni Mancha, Brihattor Guwahati Bishnupriya Manipuri Mahila Samiti, Brihattor Maligaon Bishnupriya Manipuri Mahila Samiti and Gokulananda Geetiswami Kala Krishti Kendra. Mrinal Kanti Sinha hosted the whole programme.

At the end, Sanjib Sinha extended vote of thanks to all Chief Guests, Speakers, audiences, participants, organizers for extending their co-operation and support to make the programme a grand success.

A Brief History of Gokulananda Geetiswami

Gokulananda was born on November 26 in 1886 in a village called Madhavpur in Bhanubil, Bangladesh. He shifted his residence from Bhanubil in 1925 to Tripura at a village named Ratachhera. He was a man of intellect and revolutionary thoughts who always thought for the upliftment of the Bishnupriya Manipuri people. In order to reform the society, he travelled far and visited villages after villages to spread his message through singing. The Nikhil Bishnupriya Manipuri Mahasabha for his contribution to the community honoured Gokulananda, also known as Gokul Kirtani, with the title “Geetiswami” in 1993. He was a litterateur, a politician, a composer, and a dramatist. Gokulananda used to sing “padkirtan” as a means to reach the backward Bishnupriya Manipuris who were sparsely distributed in Assam, Tripura, Bangladesh, Manipur, and Myanmar. The “padkirtans” that Gokulananda performed were mainly of “Maanbanjan”, “Noukavilas”, “Subal meelan” etc those were related to the cultural and religious aspect of the community. He also tried to influence the people by singing his verses, studded with jokes and fun to bring awareness among the Bishnupriya Manipuris. He became an elected representative of the Communist party of India in 1950 in the then Territorial Council of Tripura. He died on July 10, 1962 after rendering his invaluable service for the development of the community.

Saare Jahan Se Acha Hindustan hamara

Students of Kendriya Vidyalayas, the largest system of Central government schools in India, which serve children of Defence Personnel, share something common in their experiences of school days.

About the school:  A Central School or Kendriya Vidyalaya, has always a vibrant and invigorated environment with frequent transfer of students. The most distinct feature that characterizes a central school is its creating a mini-India in the school. KV Students are mostly the children of personnel under different armed forces posted out to different parts of India. They speak different mother tongues, born and brought up in different localities, defence campuses, and bring with them traits of all these specialties.

A student who has studied in different Kendriya Vidyalayas located in different regions of India could hardly remember all the friends’ name who had once shared his bench, and classroom in his schooldays. It is often seen one-third students who make a new class usually left at the end of the academic session, changing the overall look of the whole class, and the whole school.

A student remaining in a school for more than 3 years is often being asked the silly question: When will your father get posting? I remember, this question was frequently asked to my brother by his teacher in KV Air Force Station, Srinagar, J&K.  Got irritated, my brother once said, “Sir, my father has got posted to Andaman and Nicober Island!”

The entry of new students in a class sometimes creates havoc for the old students! Especially, when they remove the topper tag from the earlier class toppers very cruelly and change the dynamics of the whole class. I had seen such incidents so many times in my school life when a new student supersedes the earlier topper in studies.

Reference: It is another unique characteristic of the KV. One will find students giving reference to his friend whose father is posted in a region from where he had come. “OK your father is posted there…, you will be admitted either in that school or there…and if you get admission in that school from where I came ….meet my cousin…, my friends…and say I’m OK on behalf of me.” It is really great when you find a mentor to guide you for the journey in a new school.

Many times, it happens, a junior or a senior or even your previous classmate coming to the same school where you are studying since long time… And suddenly a student visits you referred by your previous school friends. It is so beautiful giving reference or being referred.

NDA craze: It is another feature that KVites are smitten with very early in their schooldays. Students narrate stories like folklore about how their seniors get into the Indian Army, Air Force, and Navy through the National Defence Academy. The mania goes so deep that students would have already planned where they will be joining - in the Indian Army, the Air Force or in the Indian Navy. When the D-day comes, the whole class XII students would appear for the exam at any cost! In my case, my friends went to Jammu for appearing in the exam from Kashmir, which was 300 kilometers away. And some friends went further down to Chandigarh. However, I was alone who appeared in the Kashmir valley. The center of examination was at Amar Singh College at Gojji Bagh, Srinagar.

Bharat ka Swarnim Gaurav Kendriya Vidyalaya Layega: Every KV student from Leh Ladhak to Kanyakumari, from Porbandar to Itanagar has definitely sung this song with open throat beside a music teacher with a harmonium at the assembly in the early morning. The Almighty God’s prayer ‘Daya Kar daan Vidya ka’ cleanses every KV soul with its divinity and gives amnesty for all mischief. Other songs like Saare Jahan Se Acha, Hum Honge Kaamyaab, Hind Desh Ke Niwasi Sabhi Jan ek hai…weaves the students in one string of Bharatiyata.

Kendriya Vidyalaya Geet

Armoury Mascot: One will find most of the KV schools under Air Force have fighter aircraft in their entrance. If you visit KV Borjhar, Guwahati, Assam, and KV No 2, Air Force Station, Srinagar, you would see 1971 aircraft. Even KVs under Army, you will find tanks and other artillery armoury in the campus. Visit KV Masimpur, Assam, there is a tank on the way of school.

My school days experiences of Kendriya Vidyalaya are precious memories of lifetime. In my opinion, the feeling of oneness imbued into me is due to KV culture in which I have grown up. It is really a proud feeling when some body eulogizes Kendriya Vidyalaya as one of the best schools in the country.

My friends out there, who did their schooling in Kendriya Vidyalaya, must have same proud feeling ‘Saare Jahan Se Acha Hindustan hamara.’

Writers’ forum recalls Geetiswami

GUWAHATI, Nov 27: The 114th birthday of Geetiswami Gokulananda, an alternative media mogul, was observed with a day-long programme, including an impressive cultural programme that continued till late last night, by the Bishnupriya Manipuri Writers’ Forum (BMWF) at Radhamadhab Sebashram, Maligaon, Guwahati. The programme was presided over by Radhamadhab Sebashram president Shyamakanta Sinha (Paran).

Dr Prabhat Kumar Sinha stole the show light by presenting a comparative study on various aspects of life and contribution of Kalaguru Bishnu Rabha and Geetiswami Gokulananda conducted by himself. Dr Sinha has already submitted a thesis to the University Grant Commission (UGC) on this very topic after completion of his research work.

Litterateur Manashi Sinha, while giving a detailed account on Geetiswami Gokulananda, highlighted the efforts made by the alternative media mogul and bard to uplift the condition of women. A woman activist herself, she made a fervent appeal to the women folk of the Bishnupriya Manipuri community to be conscious enough so as to get their rights at par with the male members of the community. According to her, women in the society can put an end to discrimination against them only when the fairer sex is fully aware of their rights and duties.

Among other speakers, while Advocate Biswa Prasad Sinha and youth leader Shankha Sinha threw much light on the life and contribution of Geetiswami, the BMWF president gave a detailed account on the activities of the Forum. He also elaborated various literary and social activities of the bard.

As many as 31 senior citizens of Guwahati were felicitated in the function. It was followed by a cultural nite in which guest artistes Suchitra Sinha and Shyam Kumar Sinha from Silchar performed much to the applause from the audience. Noted artistes of Guwahati Bina Sinha, Guru Bibhul Kanti Sinha (dance), guitarist Chandrika Rajkumari, budding dancer Saine Sinha, Rumi Sinha, Doll Sinha and others also presented much to the satisfaction of the capacity crowd.

GUWAHATI, Nov 27 – The Bishnupriya Manipuri Writers’ Forum celebrated the 114th birthday of Gokulananda Geetiswami, the national poet and philosopher and prophet of the Bishnupriya Manipuri community in the State on November 26 at Radhamadhab Sevashram, Maligaon, a press release said.

At the beginning of the programme, the flag of the forum was hoisted by Purandar Sinha, the noted social worker and various senior social workers, writers paid their tributes to the poet.

A discussion on the life, literature and philosophy of the poet was held in which a number of intellectuals, writers from various parts of the north eastern region took part and appreciated him as the father of Bishnupriya Manipuri literature, modern thinker and philosopher. The symposium was presided over by Shyamakanta Sinha. Prof Prabhat Kr Sinha and Manashi Sinha were present as special guests. Haridas Sinha, the noted biographer of the late poet and the guest of honour of the programme was emotional before the crowd while delivering his flawless appreciation to the poet and discussed at length the pain and humiliation he faced at the propagation of his immortal songs among the masses.

Dr Prabhat Kr Sinha, the distinguished guest in the celebration, was honoured for his obtaining doctorate degree in research in the socio political aspects of the Bishnupriya Manipuri community.

The programme began with a welcome address from Jayprakash Sinha, president of the reception committee. Lakshmindra Sinha, the president of Bishnupriya Manipuri Writers Forum expressed his gratitude to all the distinguished guests, speakers, participants and audiences for their participation and discussed in brief the significance of the celebration of Geetiswami’s birthday.

The most attractive programme during the day was the felicitation of the senior citizens in the city where more than two dozens of senior citizens were present and they were very emotional in expressing their tributes to Gokulananda.

The competitors participating in the recitation and singing competion were felicitated with a merit certificate and cash. At the end a cultural programme was held.

Narendra Kumar Sinha (Tagore), the general secretary of the celebration committee thanked all for their wholehearted support in making the programme a grand success.

Song and recitation competitions on Geetiswami held

The Bishnupriya Manipuri Writers’ Forum (BMWF) today conducted a song and recitation competition on songs and poems of Gokulananda Geetiswami at Babyland School in Tarun Nagar, Guwahati. As many as 15 budding singers took part in the song competition and 20 students took part in the recitation competition. Guru Bibhul Kanti Sinha accompanied the competitors with the harmonium.

President over by BMWF president DILS Lakshmindra Sinha and anchored by poet Mrinal Kanti Sinha, the competitions had Nilima Sinha as the judge for songs and poet Hareswar Manab as the judge for recitation. Noted educationists and litterateurs Shukhajyoti Sinha and Kumkum Sinha, litterateur Narendra Kumar Sinha, poet Rajkumar Sinha (Rijab), Nikhil Bishnupriya Manipuri Mahasabha’s Loutak Guwahati branch committee president Jyotiprakash Sinha and others were present on the occasion that was participated by Santa Sinha as the chief guest.

The results of the competition will be declared on November 26 at Radhamadhab Sebashram, Maligaon in the city where 114th birth anniversary of Gokulananda Geetiswami, an alternative media mogul, will be observed with a day-long programme on that day.

In Chaprabari, a Bishnupriya Manipuri village near Majbat under Udalguri district in BTC, the Nikhil Bishnupriya Manipuri Mahasabha formed a branch committee on November 22. The meeting took place under the guidance of Anil Singha Gautam, Vice President of the Mahasabha central committee.

Simu Singha, Vice President of Assam state Sahitya Parisad appreciated the people of Chaprabari village for maintaining their cultural and linguistic identity despite a wide gap of communication with the mainstream Bishnupriya Manipuri community.

Traveling to Places

The only time I visit new places in Delhi is when I join in a new job - in a new location. If there is no change of job, I don’t see any other reason to pay a visit. You can say I live in a claustrophobic world. Making me round the whole city and surrounding areas – change of office, I will cite one strong reason to see this city in different time periods. It is amazing to see - How the city looks at morning office hours and at evening, when people struggle to get to their home as early as possible!

What is the importance of a new job? Not to mention, with pay hike, if there is something that goes with the change of job, it is exploring the adjoining areas, remembering the bus routes. Extend it to remembering the shortest routes to get into office. It is altogether a new vibrant world. New colleagues, new office culture and new bus conductors.

Looking back in my life, I see I had been maintaining a self-imposed radius of my traveling or visits. When I was in Guwahati, Assam, my radius of my visit was up to Maligaon for three years till I graduated, it got extended to Silpukhri only due to the Assam Tribune, and up to Bangagarh area again due to The Sentinel office, to Kalapahar area with NETV office. Besides these places if someone asks me where is 6 Mile or Khanapara or Christianbasti in Guwahati city. My answer is: I don’t know. This was my radius.

While in my shool days in Kashmir, the story was not so different. Though traveling in Kashmir is at ones own risk. I never had the penchant (or courage) to venture out to (I believe there is two population residing in Kashmir. One, local Kashmiris, and second defence personnel) Kashmir beyond fences and security posts. Minus my school which was situated at Srinagar Airport, and occasionally visiting the tourist places, I haven’t visited the real Kashmir. For me “Kashmir” was my fortified campus.

Tour Delhi. It only occurs while traveling to office. Jantar Mantar- Oh… I change my bus there. Lotus Temple – Hey…my cab used to go adjacent to its wall. Lal Qila – recently I have started visiting the place. Delhi Metro – it is one of the primary modes of traveling in my traveling schedule. These are some reactions that come up when someone enquire me about these places or about the Delhi life. Has there been a time when I visited places in Delhi with the bent of exploring mind? No…

Swinging of a poor soul from home to office and back ironically is full of experience. More one narrates about the Delhi Metro, it is less. Why not? It has changed the face of Delhi. How it criss-cross the whole city, from the densely populated Old Delhi to distant places like Dwarka? It is a fantastic feeling traveling in the late hours, more so observing the activities of commuters.

One can see old commuters doing their yoga postures in the Delhi Metro! And some engrossed into books, magazines. Don’t get jerk, if you are reading a novel and the author sitting beside you and asking, “How is the book?” It has happened with me.

If you love war movies, you can observe the war scene unfolding in the Rajiv Chowk Metro station at the office time. How the commuters prepares themselves to board at this station just like they (soldiers) landing in Normandy. Even the motion of the commuters at this station will recall you the Physics’ lesson: Brownian Motion.

Besides the Delhi Metro, if there is something that can’t be ignored in the Delhi traveling itinerary, it is the DTC bus conductors. Beware of the DTC bus conductors. My advice. One mistake, and you will not find a place to hide in the big city.

So, this was about my interaction with places and traveling experiences in Delhi that has all happen due to job change.

Mahasabha forms Jiri Ancholic Committee

In a meeting held at Goukhal Mandop, Jiribam, Manipur on November 15, the Nikhil Bishnupriya Manipuri Mahasabha (NBMM) formed a 21-member Jiri Ancholic Committee.

Inaugurating the meeting, Udhay Sinha, Secretary General of Mahasabha gave a detailed history of the formation and functions of the oldest socio-cultural body and said that the Jiri Ancholic Committee would work for the development of culture and preserving the ethnic identity of Manipuri community.

Anil Singha Gautam, Vice-President of the Central Committee of Mahasabha, and who played a pivotal role in the formation of the Committee in the Manipur valley stressed upon the need of bonding and sharing cultural relationship between the two sects of the community (Manipuri) by maintaining brotherhood relationship through mutual co-operation and exchanges. He also emphasized to work for the integrity of Manipur and Manipuries.

Rakeshwar Singha who organized the meeting gave thanks to Manipur Government for its assistance in the construction of Sri Sri Bhubaneswar Sadhu Thakur Sevashram at East Goukhal, Manipur. Nabakumar Singha and Upendra Singha were elected as President and Secretary of the committee in the meeting. The meeting was chaired by Sri Nabakumar Singha.

Lyrics and tune of the songs is given by Chandrakanti Sinha. He had earlier released 8 audio CDs of self-written lyrics consisting of 48 Bishnupriya Manipuri songs.

Preeti Sinha has given her voice in the album. She is an approved artist of Doordarshan Kendra, Silchar and a folk singer in the All India Radio. The singer’s earlier recording is “Khalkoriya Chaik”, produced by Chandrakanti Sinha.

The album is videographed and edited by Subhendu Sinha, Guwahati; and it is directed by Ashutosh Sinha (Ravi), Devadas assisted him. Music arranged by Janmi Das.

Action Taken for the Protection of Northeastern Youths in Delhi

In the context of recent incidents of physical violence reported in Delhi against students/youth hailing from North Eastern (NE) States, the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) took up the matter with Ministry of Home Affairs and Delhi Police to ascertain the steps taken by them to protect the safety and security of North Eastern (NE) students in Delhi. The Commissioner of Delhi Police on 15.10.2009 has issued a standing order containing guidelines and steps to be taken for tackling the problem faced by students and others from NE States in Delhi which include:-

• A ‘Zero Tolerance Policy’ in respect of crime against women, including those hailing from NE States.
• Where necessary, action under law/ preventive action under Cr. PC be initiated.
• Quick action to be taken by the police to restore confidence in the victim and the community.

Regular patrolling by Police in all police stations in the North and North west and south Delhi Districts, including police stations at Model town, Mukharjee Nagar, Civil Line, Roop Nagar, Timarpur, Kotla, Satya Niketan, Dhaula Kuan etc, covering hostels and pockets in residential colonies where NE Students live in large numbers .

Beat constables in the above mentioned areas to establish close interaction with community leaders of NE Region. SHOs must have regular bimonthly meetings with community leaders.

Members from the NE community to be co-opted in Thana level committees to ensure redressal of grievances.

Nodal officers, i.e. DCP/North, DCP/ East and DCP/ South to liaise with NE Resident Commissioners (RC) and have regular interactions with resident welfare association (RWAs), student groups/ residents.

Women from NE to call the Police Helpline 1090, 1091 and 100 Number in case of need.

A meeting under the Chairmanship of Shri P.K. Pattanaik, Joint Secretary, Ministry of DoNER was held with the Resident Commissioners (RC) of North Eastern States on 27th October 2009. In the meeting the Resident Commissioners were informed of aforesaid guidelines issued by Delhi Police and were provided a copy thereof for their use as reference material. The Resident Commissioners were advised to:-

Disseminate the instructions issued by Delhi Police to community members through Associations with a view to create a sense of confidence among them in an appropriate manner by bringing out appropriate advertisements in NE and National News Papers.

Maintain a directory containing the names, contact numbers and addresses of people from NE States in Delhi.

Sensitize the students/youth from NE States before they leave their respective state about the social environment, cultural differences and prevailing situation in Delhi and follow a list of Do’s and don’ts like avoiding to be at public places during late hours, ensuring moving in groups rather than alone etc.

Arrange talk shows, panel discussions on local TV channel/ media to create sense of awareness in the people about the situation in Delhi.

RCs will get in touch with people hailing from their respective states through the Organisations/Associations and identify their grievances and facilitate them to take up their problems with MHA, Delhi Police at appropriate levels for redressel. It was noted that North Eastern Council, Ministry of DoNER and Ministry of Tribal Affairs are jointly constructing a hostel for the NE girls in Delhi University as one of the steps to mitigate their accommodation problem.

The Secretary, Ministry of DoNER, Ms. Jayati Chandra vide her D.O. letter dated 6th November 2009 has also requested the Chief Secretaries of the North Eastern States requesting them to direct the RC of the respective state in Delhi to:-

Collect details of names, contact No. and address in Delhi of people from the NE State and maintain a directory thereof. To obtain these details if he has to issue advertisements in Delhi News Paper, Ministry of DoNER will bear the expenses.

Have continuous interface with the people/students from the respective state.

Get in touch with the Associations/Organisations of the NE students and organise a get together in the Bhawan and identify their grievances and facilitate them to take up their problems with MHA and Delhi Police at appropriate level for redressal.

Advise the people/students from the NE State to follow the Do’s and Don’ts like avoiding to be at public places during late hours, ensuring moving in groups rather than alone, increase interaction with other (student) bodies in their respective schools/colleges/places of work etc. and in case of emergency make use of Delhi Police helpline No. 1090, 1091, and 100 and also contact the office of the RC in Delhi. The RC may set up a 24 hour helpline for this purpose and give wide publicity about the helpline.

To organise workshops and sensitise the students/youth from the NE State about the social environment, cultural differences and the prevailing situation in Delhi, as they have the requisite infrastructure i.e. auditorium etc. to arrange such activities. The Ministry of DONER is open to the idea of bearing some part of expenditure which may be incurred.

The instructions issued by Delhi Police, a copy of which has already been made available to the RC, could be disseminated to community members through the associations with a view to instil confidence among them in an appropriate manner by the RC by bringing out appropriate advertisements national newspapers.

A Cell headed by Joint Secretary, Ministry of DoNER and consisting of the RCs of the eight NE States, a Deputy Secretary and Under Secretary of Ministry of DoNER has been set up in the ministry to review the action taken in this regard.

The Singer Artist

"Captain Kumardhane, Thektara manurta buliya, sab samay sarbada asego.." (Paritraan movie)

This was Ashutosh Sinha who played the role of Captain Kumardhan, the cunning and manipulative Zaminder of Paritraan. Like a true artist Ashutosh loves to experiment and explore the talent in him. He is a singer, an actor and a social activist.

Since his college days, he started singing in Hindi, Bengali and Assamese, and had performed in various occasions in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Shillong, even in Assam, Tripura and Bangladesh.

He has given his voice in many audiocassettes produced by singers and producers. It was in the year 2002 with the release of EMAA, a patriotic song that Ashutosh went on releasing one-after-another Bishnupriya Manipuri songs. In 2004, he produced MINGAL, in 2005 JAIRIGA RAI KOMOLINI (Devotional song ) and BULURI MI (his 2 songs recorded in this audio cassette was released by singer Ms. Debjani Sinha).

Born on March 29, 1957 at village Burunga, Patharkandi, Karimganj District (Assam) to parents Late Krishna Kumar Sinha (Bideshi) and Magalsena Rajkumari, Ashutosh completed his schooling from Halflong College and went on pursuing Vocal Classical from Narayan Sangeet Mahavidyalaya, Maligaon (Guwahati). He also played the lead negative role in Kalling. He is a well-known traditional Bishnupriya Manipuri “Kirtani” performing in different religious/devotional occasions.

His father was a State Government employee in the Revenue Department (Settlement) at Patherkandi. He is cousin of well-known Bishnupriya Manipuri singer - Oja Kalasena Rajkumar.

Working as Museum Assistant in the Director of Industries & Commerce, Assam, he is also closely associated with socio-cultural activities of the Bishnupriya Manipuri community. He is General Secretary of Nikhil Bishnupriya Manipuri Sanskriti Parishad (NBMSP)/Central Committee; Cultural Secretary of Bishnupriya Manipuri Kristi Kendra; and Joint General Secretary of "Anandam", a Guwahati-based socio-cultural NGO founded by Voice of India Sa Re Ga Ma winner Debojit Saha.

For his notable contribution to the field of art and culture, he was felicitated by DILS Sanstha in November 30, 2008, the day of celebration of birth anniversary of Geetiswami Gokulananda organized by the Geetiswami Gokulananda Janma Jayanti Udjapon Committee at Shilpagram, Panjabari(Guwahati).

Bhubaneshwar Sadhu Thakur 139th birth anniversary celebrated in Pune and Mumbai

Bishnupriya Manipuri Kalyan Sangthan, Mumbai-Pune celebrates the birth anniversary of Sadhu Thakur in Pune on the day of his Janma-Tithi. Sadhu Thakur’s Janma-Tithi falls on the Bhatri Dwittia day, that is two days after Dipaboli (Dwipaanjli) and a day after Gobardhan Puja. The Sangthan celebrated the Mahotsav this year in Pune on October 20 and in Mumbai on November 1.

I feel proud and privileged to be associated with Bishnupriya Manipuri Kalyan Sangthan, Pune-Mumbai that organized the birth anniversary celebration of Sadhu Thakur and other functions of the community.

I, on behalf of Bishnupriya Manipuri Kalyan Sagathan, take this opportunity to thank the Bishnupriya Manipuris of these two cities who have encouraged and helped us to organise the Mahotsav.

There is a need of a religious icon for today’s society. The Ganesha Utsav in Maharashtra, was the vision of India’s great freedom fighter Bal Gangadhar Tilak. During India’s Freedom struggle, Tilak realized that his country needed a religious icon to bring collective consciousness and propagate the unity among the Maharashtrians. That could be only possible by making the Ganesha festival a public celebration. Tilak thus initiated a new resurgent movement of social awakening.

Similarly, our vision should be to eliminate superstition and illiteracy among our people. Celebrations like the Sarbojanin Sadhu Thakur’s Janma Barshiki are important to bring community people together. These occasions present a platform where all people, poor or rich, could gather, forgetting the differences and create a healthy atmosphere for the fulfillment of the goal of Developed Society.

Bishnupriya Manipuri Films: A new direction to the society

Cinema is the finest form of creativity and art. Fortunate are those who are blessed with this potential and have been in the profession of filmmaking. It is praiseworthy who had acted and had been the part of the Bishnupriya Manipuri films. The Producers, directors, actors, singers, and crewmembers are worthy of appreciation for their endeavor. These movies have sown the seeds for the future movies that will be on the community.

Somewhere these movies, be it is the recently released Paritraan or Kalling have inspired the upcoming directors and producers to make films on Bishnupriya Manipuri community. Definitely, the new crop of directors and producers will be highlighting the different aspect of the community in their ingenious way.

What would be the possible stories that these to-be directors would be touching? Will it be sensitizing an issue of the community, what Kalling has done? Like Paritraan, will they be presenting the changing social ethos in our villages in the movies? One cannot predict, what would be the storyline of the next movie will be? One thing is sure that they will be taking the Bishnupriya Manipuri movie to a new height, what today it is missing.

Some might have reservation to praise these movies. Reasons might be many and valid. These movies have failed because one benchmarks it with Bollywood or Hollywood movies. If one isolate oneself, and for a moment keep himself away from the influence of movies made outside, one will definitely praise these movies. At least the critics will praise the creative juice the directors and crewmembers have poured in these movies.
